Title: Remembering Beethoven

Summary: In 2009 H undertook to recall a certain memory that later developed into what has become known as Remembering Beethoven. The memory recalled was of a particular image that haunted H. As a child Beethoven’s nine symphonies were listened to in the house. Each symphony was recorded on a long-playing vinyl and housed in a cardboard sleeve displaying a monochrome image of Beethoven’s portrait. The recurring image is what H endeavors to re-find through a process of painting nine different versions of Beethoven. He documents the process by date stamping and color-coding the paintings and diagrams, linking activities temporally, by a written correspondence in diary form and dated instructions for the making of the paintings. This digital file comprises photographic documentation (with digital camera) by H of nine paintings, nine diagrams and instructions.

Technical Detail: Paintings are in oil, on 12 inch square boards prepared with a gesso ground and rubber date stamped. The accompanying diagrams measure 15 inches square. They are drawn with oil paint on brown paper that is coated with Dulux matt emulsion house paint; rubber date stamped and annotated with Staedtler triplus fineliner (0.3mm) coloured pens. Some fragments of instruction have been lodged, though currently not all are available due to being under review.
